Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

Basic Recipe

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

Vanilla Glaze

  • 1 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 -3 tablespoons water

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Beat butter and shortening in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium for about 30 seconds.
  2. Add sugar, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt.
  3. Beat until combined, scraping the bowl as needed.
  4. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla.
  5. Beat in flour.
  6. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  7. Bake 12-14 minutes or until edges are set but not brown. Cool on cookie sheets about 2 minutes. Remove from sheets and cool on wire racks.
  8. Leave plain or frost with vanilla glaze.
  9. To store cookies, layer cookies between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container; cover. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  10. For the Vanilla Glaze mix all ingredients until smooth
