CUTCO Cutlery donates knives and cutting boards to organization that helps low-income kids
Jul 6, 2009
CUTCO Cutlery kitchen knives and cutting boards will be used in cooking classes for low-income children in Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami that teach the importance of nutrition and physical well-being.
CUTCO has donated over $12,000 in products to Chicago-based Common Threads, an organization that offers after-school cooking classes focused on basic kitchen skills, cooking techniques and the importance of using fresh ingredients. Chef instructors infuse cultural information into the cooking lessons to further teach students how to connect with their bodies, their neighbors and their world in a healthy way.
“Our world is culturally diverse, but through cooking, we can all find a common thread,” said CUTCO coordinator of public relations Kathleen Donovan. “Along with the lessons learned about cultural heritages, children in Common Threads’ programs are learning to prepare delicious and nutritious food, a skill that is so important to the health and well-being of kids today.”
The CUTCO donation includes dozens of chef knives, paring knives, potato mashers, vegetable peelers and cutting boards.
“In-kind donations like these help Common Threads to grow our programming and this year we will be able to serve 1,000 children nationally.” said executive director Linda Novick O’Keefe. “CUTCO’s support means the world to us.”
Common Threads was founded by Art Smith, Oprah Winfrey’s former personal chef, and artist, Jesus Salguerio. Smith and Salguerio harness the talents of well-known chefs around the country to help them develop the curriculum and teach classes.
Students who attend Common Threads programs say that they’re grades have improved and they’ve gained confidence. There is also strong evidence that after attending classes, the students are eating better at home. For more information about Common Threads, visit www.commonthreads.org.
